The Institute of Psychoplasmics

The Institute of Psychoplasmics presents an offsite evening of live art. I’ll be taking part in it with the Insectoid crew!:

Empire and Daughter Isotope + Insectoid (offsite performance event)

A one off performance by Tai Shani featuring epic prog band Guapo and electroclash diva Angie Reed. Cannibalizing pulp film and fiction through black magic cult rituals, a mini mouse anti-sacrifice of twelve virgins is crowned by five tableaux of notorious Satanist Anton Lavey posing in nudist magazine Jaybird.

Insectoid’s hive colonise the stage and perform their own entomological rites, exploring insect behaviour to produce exoskeletal sounds.

8 May doors at 20:00, performance starts 20:30

Shoreditch Town Hall,
380 Old st.
London EC1V 9LP

Tickets are £4 advance, £5 on the door and are available from The Pump House or via PayPal payment to psychoplasmics@yahoo.co.uk

Come along to it, even if you’re not in the London area!

Awards for Creative Practitioners

Of the many points of discussion at the Soapbox event on Tuesday one that took my interest was the idea of having some sort of awards. I think having awards for ‘best practitioner in x category’ would be a great way for us to better ourselves, but more importantly to actually give some way to measure what actually makes a good workshop leader. The question now is who would set up such an award?

I’m on the Printer

Now I’ve got a Gameboy Printer as well. Not really needed for any projects, but it’s just a bit of fun! It’s amazing how awful the quality is, but at the same time that’s what makes it so cool!

Wordpress Theme Development

I’ve finally updated to Wordpress 2.5. Great looking interface!

On a similar note I’ve finally decided that I’m going to develop my own Wordpress theme. Although I have a bit of knowledge when it comes to CSS and PHP I’m not really clued up on the structure of Wordpress, so have always avoided it. Here are my efforts as of today:

The overall idea is to create a Wordpress theme that is better suited to a portfolio website than a blog. In the long term I want to be able to have different layouts that are more typical of portfolio websites and also allow integration with Gallery2, which itself will have a modified display to suit portfolio websites.

That is, unless anyone can recommend an existing theme?

Rebooting

These last three months have been the most exciting, scary and interesting months of the last few years. I’ve gone from being a student who was shoved out into the real world only to be unemployed for six months to now having steady income, lots of interesting friends and a load of upcoming interesting projects.

But at what price?

I feel my artwork has really suffered recently. I haven’t done any new work in about a month and I feel bad for that. Sure, my computer did delete all 25 of my unfinished projects, but these were mostly old projects.

I’m glad that my current style of artwork is taking off rapidly, but I need time to develop my skills, explore new territory and plan where I want to go in the future. It’s really hard to do this when I’m spending a lot of my time trying to keep up with the blogscene, attending an endless amonut of meetings and gallery openings or simply doing anything but art.

so

Within the coming week I think I’m gonna be off the Internet more and indulging in art a lot more. Expect the Projects page to actually have some noteworthy content on it as well!

Gameboy

It’s surprising how hard it is to win a Gameboy from ebay. Nearly everyone wants one and because they’re usually sold in a bundle with other games and accessories it usually goes for about £30. Luckily I managed to get one from the Indoor Market for £5 and the Gameboy Camera for another £5. Schweet!

Like everyone else and their mother I’m hoping to get my groove on and make some music using programs such as LSDJ. I’m gonna get a Gameboy Pocket to make the actual music on, due to it’s bigger screen and better display, but according to some surveys the DMG has the best sound. So I’ll export it all using this one.

Birmingham Bloggers Meet 3

Last night I was at the third Birmingham Bloggers meet. If you don’t already know what it’s all about let the Facebook group do the talking.

This is the second time that I’ve been and it definitely seems more structured and formal, but I quite liked that. It meant that we had an agenda and, at the very least had an opening line when introducing ourselves to other bloggers! I wont go onto listing all of the names and blogs of everyone who attended. Just watch this handy video taken by Andrew Dubber

(check out my bit 49mins into the vid. Man, I need a haircut…)I’d like to draw up on what I said in the vid on here as well. I’m from an area of Birmingham called Winson Green. I wouldn’t exactly call that area tech savvy, so I’m very interested in seeing what a coworking space, and the people running it, can offer a communtity who are almost completely unknowledgable when it comes to technology. As well as my personal illustration work I’m a community artist and do workshops with different community groups, so I’m naturally interested in extending projects outside of niche groups into the wider community somehow. To exapnd on something that Charlotte Carey said, I’d like to get more specialist groups using and embracing technology. Based on visual appearance alone I think I was one of two Black people there, and there was probably four women there. This isn’t a fault of the blogging community at all, but what I’d like to see coworking spaces do is actively seek out these minority groups, which include ethnic minorities and women and the disabled, and introduce them to the benefits of web technologies.

The overall formal side of the meeting was great! As I was saying to Jon, I’d like to have fortnightly meetups. Although I think the arrangement should be that on one session should be based around a discussion forum and the other, like the one last night, more of a social gathering, which will perhaps still have an agenda. Whaddaya think?

I spoke to Jon Bounds and some others afterwards about how I don’t really see all that many artists using blogs. Aside from Ana Milgram and Lara Jade I haven’t stumbled across any Birmingham-based artists embracing a blog format and exploring the potential of it for their portfolio website. Since last night I’ve had a lot of cool arty ideas that incorporate and rely heavily on t’interwebber and social networking, which I’ll indulge you all with later in the week.

Can’t wait to read what everyone else thought of the meet!

That’s probably way more than 500 words. Good enough for ya Pete?
