Blackout or greyout?

If you’re not aware of what’s happening in New Zealand at the moment, have a read at this article on the Guardian website. In protest at what their government is proposing people all over the world have “blacked out” their current profile pictures and icons with black squares, as a sort of preview of what the Internet would be like if this law passed. This obviously wont change the governments mind on its own, but it’s proved a great way of getting your voice heard.

Even though us in the UK joining the protest wont directly affect their governments decision it really is supportive to know that people elsewhere do care. However, I can’t stand this half-assed attempt at joining the protest. If you’ve seen it you’ll know what I mean. I’m referring to those who don’t blackout their icon but greyscale it or have half their icon as half their original picture and half black.

If, however, you don’t want to do it or are afraid of completely blacking out your icon why not instead sign the petition, as I have done, or spread the word on Facebook, Myspace or even blog about it!

No one will hate you for not blacking out, but if you do, please, give it 100%

Linux Multimedia Studio

Whenever I’ve come across open source audio programs on people’s computers it’s always the same two, Audacity and VLC. Those two are great if you just want to play media files and do sound editing but what about composing full songs? That’s where I found Linux Multimedia Studio to be quite useful. It’s been compared to the likes of FL Studio (or Fruityloops) and for a good reason.

So far I’ve found it to be a really good program, despite not being at version 1 yet.

I’ve yet to make a full song in it, but that’s down to my knowledge of audio!

Photo Mosaic Game

I started writing a game last year after igfest. Nothing’s came of it so far so here’s the content of it. Any ideas or thoughts are welcome:

Outline
People can collectively complete a photo montage by taking pictures to fill each tile. This can be done either over the Internet or through phones and can be completed either collaboratively or competitively. Each tile of the montage has a clue attached to it e.g. Take a picture of something green. Participants can crop a photo so that it matches the clue.

I eventually want to develop it into a multimedia game as well as a paper-based one.

There’s a discussion page for it on the BARG site

Enjoy!
