There’s an open submission thingy going on and the theme is ‘In Common’. I want to look at what we have in common with nature.

So, I guess the first question is:

What do we have in common with nature?

Answers on a postcard please.

Thanks so very much to all that came to see the first B-VAC exhibition! It really was a great success.

I had a slight problem with hanging stuff up and we ran out of drinks, but for something that is funded entirely by us I think it was executed very well.

As this is my first exhibition ever (aside from the uni Degree Show) I felt really nervous about how well it’d be received, but my fears were put to rest once the event started. There’s a certain sense of satisfaction when you see someone looking at your artwork. Even if they don’t like it, just knowing that they’ve taken the time to form an opinion on it is more than satisfying.

I went to the private view for this show by Ruth Claxton but I had to run off to see Reuben, so I went back a few days later so that I could appreciate the work and not just the free wine!

To me the work talks about the future and how it’s all just bouncing off each other and we’re not really going anywhere new. The way that the old, traditional figures are fused together with bright, colourful and very experimental objects made me think about how some art is just reinventions and reinterpretations of older works.

Though, after reading the actual booklet methinks I missed the point completely! Still, good work

With the Insectoid performance over I thought it a good time to get on with the work for the upcoming B-VAC exhibition. It should all hopefully be done by next week. Here’s two progress shots in the meantime

So yeah, the first exhibition of B-VAC (Birmingham Visual Arts Coalition) is taking place soon. See flyer below.

I’ve set up a Twitter account for B-VAC but not quite sure where to go with it yet. Lets call it an experiment!

Insectoid performance reminder

Empire and Daughter Isotope + Insectoid

A one off performance by Tai Shani featuring epic prog band Guapo and electroclash diva Angie Reed. Cannibalizing pulp film and fiction through black magic cult rituals, a mini mouse anti-sacrifice of twelve virgins is crowned by five tableaux of notorious Satanist Anton Lavey posing in nudist magazine Jaybird.

Then, Insectoid’s hive colonise the stage and perform their own entomological rites, exploring insect behaviour to produce exoskeletal sounds.

8 May doors at 20:00, performance starts 20:30

New artwork

Birmingham Visual Arts Coalition has an exhibition coming up, and I’m making some new artwork for it. As a little experiment I’ll be showing you the progress shots from one of the pieces. Any comments or suggestions are welcome!
