SUMMARY:NØ LAB : (Algo|Afro) Futures

SUMMARY:No Bounds Festival
DESCRIPTION:No Bounds is thrilled to announce the first round of acts for their 6th edition this year to be held across various venues in the heart of Sheffield. \nAlong with a stellar cast of artists who are breaking down the barriers and building new bridges through electronic music\, No Bounds also announces the Hope Works residents for 2022\, exciting new commissions\, partnerships with Sheffield Cathedral for its opening and closing concerts as well as more northern focussed collaborations with organisations such as The Beatriarchy. Partnering this year with the Sheffield Cathedral\, the landmark venue will be hosting the opening concert this year featuring unique live shows from Blawan\, plus Manchester’s own Blackhaine\, as well as a closing concert curated by Mark Fell. The festival has been given full access to utilise it in its entirety so participants will be able to explore the Cathedral’s unique spaces as well as its gothic and contemporary architecture. \nHope Works will remain rave central\, the home base for the weekend. Once again closing the road outside the venue to for food trucks and a truly carnival feel to the site over 4 stages. No Bounds is honoured to be bringing together some never before seen b2bs from legends in the scene for sonic epiphanies on the dance floor. There will also be more satellite venues added this year including DINA\, The Dorothy Pax\, Bal Fashions and Plot 22. \nHope Works will host live performances from dBridge\, The Black Dog\, Deena Abdelwahed\, Lyzza and Grove. New and rare b2b’s such as SHERELLE b2b Kode 9\, Batu b2b Skee Mask plus a stellar raft of the scenes top DJs including Helena Hauff\, Job Jobse\, India Jordan\, Saoirse\, Scratchclart and TSVI. Breakthrough and upcoming talent are aplenty as always with a choice selection of the UK’s finest with Nia Archives\, LCY\, Tim Reaper\, Tom Boogizm and Blasha & Allatt representing some of the most exciting angles the UK has to offer in 2022. \nHope Works & No Bounds once again announces a cast of local residents that stay true to its vision\, 96 Back\, Diessa\, Gracie T\, Lupini\, Rian Treanor\, Tim Reaper\, Skari & Zeki\, all boundary pushing electronic musicians and selectors in their own right\, plus Pattern + Push winner\, Sheffield rapper Sarinity Jones. \nThe 2022 program leads with two major pieces of work exploring new technologies\, yet with a collective and collaborative approach\, as well as cross continental musical dialogues. “Patterns in between intelligences” is an interdisciplinary group of artists\, consisting of the live coders Alex McLean and Lizzie Wilson\, the e-Textile designer Mika Satomi and the performers Deva Schubert and Juan Felipe Amaya Gonzalez. Using AI they explore a ritualist and spiritual dimension to ask\, “CAN AI BE USED TO TRANSCEND ITSELF?” Also\, No Bounds is excited to continue our commissioned work with Mark Fell and Rian Treanor and the development of their groundbreaking multiplayer music website intersymmetric.xyz. The project launches at No Bounds 2022 with a performance featuring groups in Rotherham and Kampala\, outputting straight into the festival Sound System in real time\, peak time. This brings people together forming new musical dialogues and cross-continental collaboration. \nMore artists will be announced in phase 2\, including even more killer b2b DJ sets along with all venues\, daytime programme elements including the No Bounds trademark workshops\, talks\, panels\, visual art\, wellness strands and more commissioned works. But for now\, join us in our excitement as we begin the build towards our 6th edition. Transcend.

SUMMARY:Algorave with Badcirculation
DESCRIPTION:Badcirculation are Antonio Roberts (hellocatfood) and Maria Witek (mxwx). They use live coding software (TidalCycles + Troop) to collaboratively live code experimental techno and house\, pursuing a high energy aesthetic that is both heavy and groovy. \nAntonio Roberts is an artist and musician based in Birmingham\, UK. For his audiovisual performances he uses software including Pure Data and TidalCycles to explore the creative potential of algorithms\, glitches\, and feedback loops.\nMaria Witek is a Polish-Norwegian music scientist working in Birmingham\, UK. She live codes dance music in TidalCycles\, partly informed by her academic research\, which investigates the relationship between rhythm\, body-movement and affect. \nhttps://www.radical-openness.org/en/vortragende/badcirculation

SUMMARY:(Algo|Afro) Futures | Mini-Algorave
DESCRIPTION:The (Algo|Afro) Futures open call goes live with a mini-Algorave\, featuring performances from Antonio Roberts and Samiir Saunders. \n(Algo | Afro) Futures responds to the lack of Black representation in the live coding and Algorave scene. Piloted in 2021\, this year we are delighted to be funded through the Creative City programme to support up to ten early career Black artists\, with each receiving a paid bursary to take part in a series of workshops led by artist mentors Antonio Roberts and Gary Stewart\, supported by Alex McLean. \nLive coding is a performance practice where artists and musicians use code to create live music and live visuals. This is often done at electronic dance music events called Algoraves\, but live coding is a technique rather than a genre\, and has also been applied to noise music\, choreography\, live cinema\, and many other time-based artforms. \nIf you would like to know more\, and get a taste of the kind of work you could make through taking part in the project\, come along to our free mini-Algorave 7-8.30pm on 14 April. (Algo | Afro) Futures lead artist Antonio Roberts and Samiir Saunders (who participated in the programme in 2021) will each perform a set featuring live algorithmic techno and algorithmic visuals. \nThe project seeks applications from Black early career artists developing work within performing arts practices (music\, choreography\, live/performance art\, etc)\, and no prior experience in coding is required – only a curiosity to learn! Live coding is surprisingly accessible\, and as an algorithmic artform has more in common with weaving\, cooking and knitting than software engineering. The mentors are interested in supporting people in taking it in new directions. \nApplications to take part in the programme will open on 14 April. In the meantime\, further information about the 2021 project can be found here: https://algo-afro-futures.lurk.org/

SUMMARY:Between Sound and Concept: Listening with the CCRU
DESCRIPTION:The Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU) has seemed to grow in fame (or infamy) with each passing year since its demise in 2003. For contemporary speculative realists\, xenofeminists\, practice-based researchers and ‘para-academic’ theorists\, the group offer the kernel of a genuinely new path for 21st century philosophy and arts research\, one that blurs the line between subcultural production and high theory. Yet it is arguably within the areas of sound and music that the CCRU have the most enduring influence. \nThis symposium assesses the potentials and limits of the CCRU’s sonic theory\, from jungle and the hardcore continuum through to contemporary sound art. \nConvened by Dr Christopher Haworth\, Senior Lecturer in Music at The University of Birmingham.

SUMMARY:Algorave Live at HATCH
DESCRIPTION:Join the live algorave from 6-10pm at Hatch on Friday 22nd of October. \nFree\, no booking required \nAn algorave is a combination of ‘algorithms’ and ‘rave’: the opportunity to dance to alien rhythms and freaky visuals\, all created from code before your eyes. The practice of making electronic music visible taps into algorithmic music’s long history – opened up with live coding technology over the past decade. Made with free or open-source software like TidalCycles\, FoxDot and Hydra\, you can download it\, try it out yourself\, and be part of algorave’s strong roots in the North of England. \nFor one night only\, join some of the scene’s frontrunners to experience the human side of algorithms\, with live algorave performances from: \nBad Circulation: A/v algorave stalwart Hellocatfood (Antonio Roberts) joins forces with music psychologist mxwx (Maria Witek)\, crafting code together to confuse you into erratic movement and pure joy \nCCAI: A collaboration between drum machinist Damu and algorave instigator and creator of the TidalCycles system Yaxu (Alex McLean)\, building up shifting layers of fully improvised\, broken techno \nHeavy Lifting: This is Lucy\, co-founder of the creative collective SONA\, writing confused algorithmic music to create not-quite-techno rhythms \nInnocent: A Yorkshire-based artist and live coding performer brings melodic synths and algorithmic beat in a live environment \nEither side of the live show you can see an algorave showcase from a handpicked selection of pre-recorded algoraves from international coding performers curated by co-founder Alex McLean and Antonio Roberts.

SUMMARY:(Algo|Afro) Futures
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the live project conclusion for (Algo|Afro) Futures\, celebrating the work of four early-career Black artists who\, since April 2021\, have been exploring the creative potential of live coding. \nThe event will feature pre-recorded and live performances and artworks from: \nSamir Saunders\n Emily Mulenga\n Rosa Francesca\n Jae Tallawah \nYou can join the event here in Digbeth\, or online  – there will be a simultaneous live stream to the Eulerroom youtube channel \nFree but places are limited. Please book in advance here \nLive coding is a performative practice where artists and musicians use code to create live music and live visuals. This is often done at electronic dance music events called Algoraves\, but live coding is a technique rather than a genre\, and has also been applied to noise music\, choreography\, live cinema\, and many other time-based artforms. The project has been running at Vivid Projects and online. It was developed and delivered by mentors Antonio Roberts and Alex McLean\, two leading artists within the UK and international live coding scene. You can read more about the project artists here . \n(Algo|Afro) Futures is a mentoring programme for early career Black artists who want to explore the creative potential of live coding\, organised by Antonio Roberts and Alex McLean with Then Try This and Vivid Projects\, in collaboration with and funded by the UKRI research project “Music and the Internet: Towards a Digital Sociology of Music”. \n

SUMMARY:Overlap
DESCRIPTION:We were back with a bang in our new home\, Nortons Digbeth. Diddy Sweg played live music\, with Antonio Roberts creating a backdrop of live coded visuals. And of course\, we show&telled incredible new animation too. \nThanks to a pair of jumbo arms we kept things safely distanced. It was exciting to be in the same room as so many talented people again. Some filmmakers have shown so much animation that it was time they got more than just a standard badge. We’ve now got silver and gold badges\, and even a trophy.

SUMMARY:DEEP PLAY: Algorave Closing Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online Algorave dance party to celebrate the SPACE Art + Technology DEEP PLAY residency. \n*** NOTE: Please book your free place for this event by 15:00 GMT 19.02.21 to receive the YouTube streaming link in time. *** \nJoin us for the closing of the Deep Play Showcase with a live streamed evening of Algorave audio-visual performances. \nStarting in London\, the Algorave movement incorporates live coding into music and visual making\, projecting the results for the audience in real-time. \nAlgoraves embrace the sounds of raves from the past and introduce alien\, futuristic rhythms made through this strange\, algorithm-aided process. It’s up to those on the dance floor to help the musicians make sense of the sounds and do the real creative work in making a great party. \nCelebrating the end of our six-month residency process exploring the intersections between technology and artistic practice\, the Algorave movement encompasses the ethos of experimentation that the SPACE Art + Tech programme reflects. \nThe Algorave will take place inside SPACE’s new virtual event room in Mozilla Hubs\, and will be live streamed on YouTube\, launching a new era for SPACE in supporting artists working at the cutting edge of digital technology. \nPerforming artists \nHmurd \nHortense \nEye Measure \nHello Cat Food

SUMMARY:Network Music Festival - NMF x TOPLAP Berlin Algorave
DESCRIPTION:A special Algorave to launch the brand new Toplap Berlin VR space in Mozilla Hubs. \nAn algorave is an event where people dance to music generated from algorithms\, often using live coding techniques. Algoraves can include a range of styles\, including a complex form of minimal techno\, and the the movement has been described as a meeting point of hacker philosophy\, geek culture\, and clubbing. At an algorave\, the computer musician may not be the main point of focus for the audience and instead\, attention maybe centered on a screen that displays live coding\, that is the process of writing source code\, so the audience can not just dance or listen to the music generated by the source code but also to see the process of programming. \nThe performers at this event are: \nRedes De Nadie | αℓõm | Codie | Caider | Aleksandr Yakunichev & Violetta Postnova | Atsushi Tadokoro | hellocatfood+mxwx+The Animalizer | IGnoto | RAW | Royal Laptop Squad | T.mo | Alo x digital selves
