Llawn Algorave

LLAWN is proud to present the first ever Algorave in North Wales. This will close the festival – so come and dance the final hours of the weekend away with us!

Algorave is a combination of “algorithms” and “rave”, the opportunity to dance to alien rhythms and freaky visuals, all created from code before your eyes. The Algorave scene is fast-growing around the world, with Sheffield a strong centre, building on its fine roots in electronic music history. Curator, artist and ‘Algoraver’ Antonio Roberts has hand picked the finest coders and artists for this event – it will be a banger!

“The scene at an algorave is often what you’d expect from any good techno night – a dark room, engaging visuals. a decent, bass-heavy speaker set-up, and lots of people ready to dance. .. performers at algoraves respond to each other and the audience in real time, often projecting the lines of code onto the walls as they type. lt’s coding as improvisation and experiment..” – The Wire magazine

“Live coders write computer programs live, while the programs generate their music, but the focus is on people dancing and seriously enjoying themselves” – Dazed and Confused

“.. not so much a revolution as a de-volution, a rolling back to the backend of music production, where the possibilities of the encoded information inside computer software is open and endless” – Mixmag

Algorave Coventry

An evening of futuristic electronic rhythms, brought to you by some of the leading lights of the Algorave movement, including one of the artists behind our WONDER exhibition, Antonio Roberts. Experience the exciting and unpredictable phenomenon of algorithms brought to life as music and visuals.

Algorave at SXSW – 10th – 12th March 2019

Algorave is heading to South By Southwest! From 10th – 12th we’ll be doing two showcases at the festival:

Dancing to Algorithms: How to Algorave

This session will discuss Algorave: a global movement focussed on creating dance music through the writing and editing of algorithms. At an Algorave, performers live code and project their screens for the audience to see the creative process unfolding. Since it emerged in the UK in 2012, Algoraves have taken place around the world, with large communities developing in North America, Japan, Europe and Latin America. To understand how the scene has expanded, we will bring together leading performers from the community to discuss the systems they use and the sounds that they make.
In a world where algorithmic processes are becoming so embedded in our daily lives and increasingly opaque, we hope to uncover why live coding is so exciting!

Please bring and laptop and some headphones.

This session takes place 15:30 – 17:30 on Sunday 10th March and will be led by me, Joanne, Shelly Knotts and Alexandra Cardenas

Lush Presents Algorave: Live Coding Party

Since emerging in the UK in 2012, Algorave has subsequently become a global movement with parties happening across the world. At an Algorave, performers live code and project their screens for the audience to see the creative process unfolding. It’s a truly audiovisual experience where sound and visuals merge together. This showcase will bring together an international host of leading performers from the Algorave scene. From minimal techno to bursts of noise all sounds and visuals will be generated through algorithms for your pleasure.

Part of Future Art and Culture produced by British Underground and supported by Arts Council England.

This showcase takes place 22:00 – 02:00 on Tuesday 12th March and features ALGOBABEZ, Alexandra Cardenas, Belisha Beacon, Byrke Lou, co34pt, Coral Manton, hellocatfood, Scorpion Mouse, Renick Bell.

Come and say hi!

Livecode Festival #2 – Visualists Meetup – 1st September 2018

On Saturday 1st September I’m organising a meetup for visualists as part of Livecode Festival #2 at Access Space in Sheffield:

A session for live coding visualists (at any level) lead by Antonio Roberts (aka hellocatfood), to talk about their tools and how they perform, with focus on Algorave visuals.

A core part of the session will be discussion around key questions for live code visualists; how do you pace yourself in a performance? Should we aim to build up slowly or go straight in with loud visuals? How much can you truly respond to the music? Is it important to show the code, and how does it fit with the musician’s projection?

The session will run from 11:00 – 16:00 and will include workshops in Pure Data/GEM (led by me), Hydra (led by Will Humphries) and Livecodelab (led by Guy John).

Get your tickets here! And whilst you’re in the area get a ticket for the Algorave on the same night at 20:00 😉

Algorave Bristol

The Jean Golding Institute at the University of Bristol has teamed up with a group of live coders to put together this exciting evening event.

“The scene at an algorave is often what you’d expect from any good techno night – a dark room, engaging visuals……a decent, bass-heavy speaker set-up, and lots of people ready to dance….. performers at algoraves respond to each other and the audience in real time, projecting the lines of code onto the walls as they type. lt’s coding as improvisation and experiment…..” – The Wire magazine

Algorave is a combination of ‘algorithms’ and ‘rave’, the opportunity to dance to alien rhythms and visuals, all created from code before your eyes. All code is projected onto walls so you will see what the performers are doing – taking the “black-boxing” out of electronic music. The Algorave scene is fast-growing reaching over 50 cities internationally over six years. Algorave champions female performers and is committed to maintaining an equal gender balance.

This Algorave will take place at The Island – a unique basement venue in an old police station including cells and an exercise yard. In this space you will dance to the best UK live-code performers and encounter algorithmic music and light installations within the space.

Cheltenham Science Festival Algorave

An Algorave is a party where electronic music is generated live from algorithms. The word was coined around 2012, initially as a joke, but has since taken hold with Algoraves taking place in over 40 cities around the world.

Drop in Live Coding

8.45–9.45pm
Computer programming is often portrayed as a solitary activity, but it can also be used to express yourself and build social connections through a shared experience of music. Drop in and have a go yourself.

Festival Party Night

10–11.30pm
Alex McLean, Joanne Armitage (from Algobabez) and Joe Wilk write the code to make you dance, with Antonio Roberts on visuals.

Algorave Supersonic Festival

After Mothwasp’s visual performance, the Wilde stage turns into an Algorave, brought to you by Supersonic and Vivid Projects curator Antonio Roberts. If you haven’t heard of or been to an algorave, be sure to check it out; an algorave is a party where electronic music and visuals are generated live from algorithms. The word was coined around 2012, initially as a joke, but has since taken hold with Algoraves taking place in over 40 cities around the world.

Supersonic’s Algorave features artists Heavy Lifting and Blood Sport, presenting a collision and mutation of their current work in a textural and improvisatory reinterpretation of the ‘B2B’ DJ set.

Heavy Lifting is Lucy writing confused live code in TidalCycles and FoxDot – divinely inspired by toads & pickled eggs she bends time signatures to create not-quite-techno rhythms. Also a member of algorave band TYPE and co-founder of the creative collective SONA.

Blood Sport are an aggro-beat trio based in Sheffield; consisting of Alex Keegan (guitar & octatrack), Sam Parkin (drums) and Nick Potter (baritone & vocals). Creating a fractured dancefloor, Blood Sport’s work mixes pre-recorded and live performance using live-coding program Tidal Cycles.

Heavy Lifting will live-code textures and rhythms using the sample-pack (to be publicly released this year), and Blood Sport will respond with music. This set was originally born out of a request from Blood Sport for Heavy Lifting to create a remix of one of their tracks, using a micro-sample pack Blood Sport had created for live-coding program TidalCycles; and after an outing at the Algomech Festival closing party, both acts have begun to work together on regular live and DJ driven performances.

Miri Kat continues the algorave: an AV Noise Artist working with Max/MSP, processing & found sound. Focuses on the creation of unique sounds and immersive multimedia, equipped with a loved of hacking, cats and mocha.

Closing the Algorave is BITLIP; a veteran livecoder and part-time Algoraver who makes downtempo techno collages out of strange samples, analogue-sounding synths, and broken breakbeats straight out of the late 90s.

Supersonic’s Algorave is hosted by Vivid Projects, a collaborative space supporting media arts practice. Based in Birmingham, they encourage innovation, risk and experimentation in artistic practice and work with artists and producers across disciplines.

Algorave is curated by hellocatfood – the alias of Antonio Roberts, a New Media artist and Curator based in Birmingham at Vivid. His artwork uses glitch art, hacking and technology-driven processes to explore issues surrounding copyright, remixing and free culture. For his live visuals he (mis)uses a range of programming languages to create glitched, broken visuals. He has provided visuals for the likes of MTV, Com Truise, Elmo Sexwhistle, Steve Davis, Henry Homesweet and My Panda Shall Fly.

The New Projectionists: VJing, AV Performance and Post-cinematic Projection

A day of panel talks and performances about VJing, live cinema and audio-visual performance. This symposium will bring together academics, artists and VJs to discuss the role of projection in their work, and the current state of AV performance in the UK. A number of thematically focussed panel talks will take place in Centrala, Birmingham on Saturday 24th February, followed by an evening of AV performances from 7pm – 10pm, and ending with a VJ Jam until late. Running in parallel at Vivid Projects there will be a number of projection-based installations. This event is a collaboration between The Projection Project, an AHRC funded research project based at the University of Warwick, and Lighttouch Festival.

Confirmed speakers/artists include: Toby Harris (*spark), Rebecca Smith (Urbanprojections), Miri Kat, Antonio Roberts, Raquel Meyers, Rod Maclachlan, Guy Edmonds, Blanca Regina, Flatpack Film Festival, Sean Clarke (Test Card Manchester), Richard Wallace.

Come along to Vivid Projects on the evening of Fri Feb 23 for a warm-up party with loud music and VJs.

Algorave Green Man

An algorave is a party where electronic music and visuals are generated live from algorithms. The word was coined around 2012, initially as a joke, but has since taken hold with Algoraves taking place in over 40 cities around the world. At an Algorave, the creation of algorithms are brought into the experience of the music itself. This process is opened up by projecting the code on screens in the venue, so audience members can see how the music they hear is being made. This is often complimented by algorithmically generated visuals projected alongside the code.
