I’m happy to launch (Algo|Afro) Futures, a mentoring programme for early career Black artists in the West Midlands who want to explore the creative potential of live coding.
Live coding is a performative practice where artists and musicians use code to create live music and live visuals. This is often done at electronic dance music events called Algoraves, but live coding is a technique rather than a genre, and has also been applied to noise music, choreography, live cinema, and many other time-based artforms.
Happy to be working with Birmingham Open Media to deliver Coder Beatz, a creative digital programme focusing on live coding for young black kids in the West Midlands.
Coder Beatz a new creative digital programme for young black kids aged between 11-15 years old. We are running 4 monthly Coder Beatz workshops between November 2020 and February 2021. In each session we will be teaching kids how to create digital music and visuals using live coding and algorithms. The sessions will be delivered by Antonio Roberts who is a renowned digital artist and expert coder. Being a man of colour, Antonio is really passionate about inspiring young black kids to get skilled up on coding music and visuals.
On Thursday 5th I’ll be back in London to perform at an Algorave at Cafe Oto
I’ll be playing an audio set alongside music and visuals from Deep Vain, Eye Measure, Hortense, Jude Marcella, Mahalia Henry-Richards, Miri Kat, Renick Bell, Seth De Silva, Yaxu, +777000 and hmurd.

Last time I was at Cafe Oto was 11 years ago for an Openlab workshop + performance which helped me on my path to explore programming as a creative practice, so it’s nice to be back but this time performing. :-)
Algorave is heading to South By Southwest! From 10th - 12th we’ll be doing two showcases at the festival:
This session will discuss Algorave: a global movement focussed on creating dance music through the writing and editing of algorithms. At an Algorave, performers live code and project their screens for the audience to see the creative process unfolding. Since it emerged in the UK in 2012, Algoraves have taken place around the world, with large communities developing in North America, Japan, Europe and Latin America. To understand how the scene has expanded, we will bring together leading performers from the community to discuss the systems they use and the sounds that they make. In a world where algorithmic processes are becoming so embedded in our daily lives and increasingly opaque, we hope to uncover why live coding is so exciting!
To close the Mediafest Algorave returns to Vivid Projects for a night of live algorithmic techno and algorithmic visuals.

Algorave is a combination of “algorithms” and “rave”, the opportunity to dance to alien rhythms and freaky visuals, all created from code before your eyes. The Algorave scene is fast-growing around the world building on its fine roots in electronic music history.
On Saturday 1st September I’m organising a meetup for visualists as part of Livecode Festival #2 at Access Space in Sheffield:
A session for live coding visualists (at any level) lead by Antonio Roberts (aka hellocatfood), to talk about their tools and how they perform, with focus on Algorave visuals.
A core part of the session will be discussion around key questions for live code visualists; how do you pace yourself in a performance? Should we aim to build up slowly or go straight in with loud visuals? How much can you truly respond to the music? Is it important to show the code, and how does it fit with the musician’s projection?
I’ll be performing at a number of Algoraves this Summer, and rather than make posts for each one here’s a list of ones happening between June - August:
Supersonic Festival is back in Birmingham after a one-year break and I’m curating and performing at it’s first Algorave. Alongside Mothwasp the Algorave will feature a collaboration between Heavy Lifting and Blood Sport with me on visuals, BITLIP, and Miri Kat.
On 12th February I’ll be on visuals duty for an Algorave taking place at Rough Trade in Nottingham as part of the Festival of Science and Curiosity

An Algorave is a party where electronic music is generated live from algorithms. The word was coined around 2012, initially as a joke, but has since taken hold with Algoraves taking place in over 40 cities around the world.
At an Algorave the creation of algorithms are brought into the experience of the music itself. This is done using specially made “Live Coding” environments such as SuperCollider, TidalCycles, Gibber, ixi lang and Extempore. This processed opened up by projecting the code on screens around the venue, so audience members can see how the music they hear is being made. This is often complimented by algorithmically generated visuals projected alongside the code.
On 3rd December I’ll be curating and performing at the Algorave at Vivid Projects.

On Friday, May 6th 2016 from 6-11pm Ravensbourne’s new BA Design & Coding course is happy to sponsor the first Algorave@Rave, an audiovisual concert featuring live performers from across the world who elevate coding to an art.
Experimental, algorithm-aided, genre-misled, live-coded sound and visuals from the future coming to life before your eyes; bleeps, crashes, warts and all. Algorave is punk music of the next generation.
A day after the previously announced Algorave in Leeds I’ll be heading furtherer up North on 30th April to do an Algorave in Newcastle.
The lineup is rather similar and features the likes of Benoit and the Mandelbrots, Joanne, UIAESK!, and yaxu together with visuals from myself and chez.io. Tickets are only £6.47!
On 29th April I’ll be back up north ( <3 ) to join some of my favourite people for an Algorave in Leeds.
On visuals will be Rituals, hellocatfood (that’s me!), Chez.io and providing audio will be Alexandra Cardenas, Anny, Belisha Beacon, Foxdot, Joanne, Reggaetron, Sam Aaron, Uiaesk!,Yaxu with more to be announced

I took part in Algorave in Gateshead on 26th April. Apart from being incredibly awesome it was my first time live coding - or rather live patching - visuals in Pure Data from scratch. I emphasise from scratch because nearly all of my performances involve me modifying patches, but never starting with a completely blank canvas. I also occasionally used the HSS3jb as a texture for objects, but never on its own. It’s also great for when crashes occur, which is/was often ;-). Here’s a few sampels of my visuals.
