Dec Ackroyd – Cityscape #46

decackroyd_cityscapesCityscape #46 image is from a series of GIF based images that are made to resemble city skylines, the images are created using digitally broken image files

Jason Soliday – Harbinger Variations

jasonsoliday_harbingerHarbinger Variations consists of five disassembled, reprocessed, and remixed versions of a track entiteld Harbinger Bit that I posted to my Soundcloud in early 2012. Harbinger Bit itself is comprised of disassembled, reprocessed, and remixed audio from various live performances in late 2011.

Charlotte Frost and Rob Myers – #arthistory

charlotterob_hasharthistoryThese 3D printed models of the Twitter hashtag ‘#arthistory’ rendered here in plastic and in gold-plated stainless steel are a playful way to think about what art history might be in the age of social media and crowd-sourcing. The entire artwork comprises both the creation of the ability to render this piece of digital text in 3D form and its ownership/use by anyone. There is a dedicated website (http://hasharthistory) that explains the project and points to how the tags can be obtained. It also features links to places where you can see the hashtag in use and join in (i.e. tagging real world items as ‘art history’), these include a Flickr gallery, a Tumblr blog and of course the #arthistory Twitter stream. The project is also a three dimensional and/or practice-based rendering of an argument made by Charlotte Frost in an online art history article entitled: ‘Is Art History Too Bookish?’ In this article which is deliberately offered online, rather than in print Frost asks after the extent to which the format of printed books have contributed to the way we think about art. In this sense, the tags ponder the physical nature of textual objects and the future of art discourse. The work is also closely related to Myers’ series of ‘Sharable Readymades’ which is the creation of 3D printable models of iconic works of art.

Jeff Donaldson – 16bit Edition Glitch Scarf – source: Atari ST emulator read error

jeffdonaldson_glitchscarfThe 16bit Edition Glitch Scarf is a continuation of the exploration of glitch imagery as a new paradigm in textile design. Beginning in 2001 by preparing video game systems with wires to alter their function, textile renders of 8bit glitch patterns began with the 1st edition, 8bit glitch scarf in 2007. Limited to 20 pieces, the pattern was created with a prepared Nintendo Entertainment System then, rendered as a wearable glitch knit at a 1:1 pixel to knot ratio. The 16bit Edition Glitch Scarf pattern was created with an Atari ST emulator running a classic demo scene release at a different resolution than it was coded for. A read error glitch result was then chosen and rendered as a glitch textile again at a 1:1 pixel to knot ratio.

Illuminate – Outdoor Projections, 19.03.2013

On Tuesday 19th March I’ll be curating a selection of films for the Illuminate outdoor projection event as part of the Arts and Science Festival at University of Birmingham.

illuminate

Large scale outdoor projections will illuminate the night sky at this spectacular display of images, short films, and artists’ film and video.

Presented in partnership with Associated Architects, Arup, Couch Perry Wilkes and Sweett Group, visualizations of the new University library will be unveiled for the first time alongside content from some of the region’s leading film-led organisations.

Flatpack offer a sneak peak at some of the short films screening as part of their annual film festival (21st -31st March across Birmingham); and Vivid Projects in association with Antonio Roberts will preview Dirty New Media – a digital takeover of the Barber Institute of Fine Arts on Thursday 21 March. The Barber will present their own images too – including projections of oil paintings from their permanent collection.
The Watson Building never looked so good.

This screening, featuring pieces by myself, Carrie Gates and Minuek, will act as a preview to Dirty New Media, which will take place on 21st March. It’s all free!!!.

BYOB London 2013

A big thanks to Lawrence Lek for putting together BYOB London 2013. There was a great selection of works, ranging from projection-mapping, generative art and even artware.

BYOB London 2013 – 10th March

BYOB London 2013

I’ll be appearing at BYOB London 2013 this Sunday, 10th March. The event kicks off at 6pm at The White Building (how appropriate), 7 Queen’s Yard, London E9 5EN and goes on until 9pm.

I’ll be showing, amongst other things, some of the gifs from New Everything. More details about other participating artists is available on the website or Facebook event page

Framing FRAME_birmingham

Co-directing FRAME_birmingham revealed to me many problems that I never usually face when working digitally. On screens, that are sometimes no bigger than our palm, we’re able to wander through a seemingly infinite space and control and change everything we see at our leisure with only the click of a mouse or tap of a screen.

With the FRAME_birmingham rehange I didn’t have such control. There were no “handles” with which to resize pieces, nor could the size of the room be changed in a menu item.

This lack of control, whilst intimidating at times, forced me to take a creative approach to arrangement.
